As I was praying about what I had and hadn’t accomplished as pianist, I recognized that I’ve been avoiding making a Solo Piano Album for one reason and one reason only; discipline. I couldn’t find the focus necessary to continuously work on the same songs over and over, let alone playing songs that I had written without losing interest. I have a habit of always saying I can write something better (a common trait among artists). Then God gave me the focus and opportunity I needed to finish this project!

What I tried to do with this album was compose something that the average listener can throw on in any type of circumstance. Something you can turn on when you are driving to work, as you watch a sunset, cooking a meal, or hanging with friends. Another goal of mine was to take the harmonic density of jazz and apply that to a shorter song format hopefully providing an accessible way to be introduced to these types of sounds. Surprisingly it is much harder for me to compose something short rather than long. This challenge was incredibly fun because it forced me to make sure I knew the exact arrangement going into the session. Since I am an improviser at heart, I still gave myself open vamp sections and the ability to decide when the musical idea was at its ending point before continuing on.
